Dude, Business Planning Could Save You From a Wipe Out. Like, Totally.

Which category does your business fall into? Are you moving with the pace of change or being moved by the pace of change?

As a volunteer surf life saver I spend many hours on the beach watching what’s going on. Over the years I have observed that those in the surf fall into two broad categories; those who move with the water, and those that are moved by the water. The really interesting difference between these two groups, is not their relative skill levels, but their level of self-awareness and ability to plan ahead.

As a professional consultant I find businesses remarkably similar. There are some businesses where it seems that everyone is always flat out doing, with no time for considered thinking. One major multinational client fell into this category; they were so busy finding new customers that they didn’t have time to ask why their existing customer churn was well above 60% p.a., let alone what to do about it.

Another, a small business, was so busy selling, that they didn’t have time to work out why they weren’t making much money. In both cases a small amount of time working on the business rather than in it solved the problem. As one manager said to me afterwards, “We were so busy firing, we didn’t have time to aim.”

In my experience, many businesses have the answers they need already within themselves, what they don’t have is the inclination or method to extract them. Sometimes, simple prioritisation and planning of a multitude of existing ideas is the solution. Actually “being a mover” rather than “being moved” is much more to do with attitude rather than time. Which is your business?
